Butterick 5851…A Review

Butterick 5851…A Review

Hey guys! How are ya doing!? LOL let's talk…

I had a luncheon to attend and I did not know what I wanted to wear.

You know how we do it, we stand in the closet and just complain about having NOTHING to wear.

Now I sew a LOT and I always have something I can grab at a moments notice but there was nothing in there that I WANTED to wear.

I had a dress that I started making but decided once I finished the bodice I didn't like the way it looked on me or the way it fit around the neckline. We all have those clothing items right? Right lol.

Instead of just throwing it all away, I decided to salvage it and make a skirt out of it.

I think that was the best decision I could have made.

Floral skirt
I love the way it came out and it looks fantastic on me.
I've learned over the years what looks good on my size/shape and what doesn't. This is a great silhouette for me.

I paired it with pearls, bling and a gold snake clutch. I love the texture of the clutch.

AccessoriesI was going to wear gold shoes but decided that this colbalt blue suede pump was the best way to go and it was. Looks great if I do say so myself lol
Shoes

For those of you that sew, here is a review of the actual dress pattern:
Pattern Description: Bias, fitted dress has lined bodice, underarm gussets and sleeves, and back zipper. A: purchased brooches. C: side pockets.

Pattern Sizing: 8-16

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

lol no
Were the instructions easy to follow? This
instructions were fine. It's rated as easy but I don't think I would
call this an easy pattern. Especially if you are a beginner. But this is
just MY opinion. Even though there are no set in sleeves, this one has a
gusset under the arm that I think can be confusing if you are new to
sewing. Maybe I was tired and it just didn't make sense to me, again my
opinion.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I purchased this for view C. I loved the neckline and the back of the dress.

Fabric Used: Cotton sateen

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Here we go. I hardly ever make a muslin. EVER. I don't normally have
any fitting issues, and when I do it's nothing significant. When I got
to a point where I could try this on, the neckline was just WAY too
high. I decided to keep going and add the lining. WAY too high. Felt
like I was choking. I made a very last minute decision to make this
dress to wear to a function the day before I wanted to wear it lol. If I
would have had time, I would have just re-cut the top to lower the
front neckline a little. I didn't have time and I wasn't going to stress
over it so I just got rid of the top and kept is as a skirt. I added
gros-grain ribbon to the waist and a zipper and called it a day.

Turned out great! I made it WORK lol

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I don't want to make this again and I don't recommend it at all.

Conclusion: I love my skirt that is supposed to be a dress lol.
