The Printed Jumpsuit | Simplicity 1355

The Printed Jumpsuit | Simplicity 1355

Hey y’all!! Happy Wednesday. We have ALMOST made it to this much needed extended weekend lol.

Printed jumpsuits are so on trend right now. Of course I had to have my own.

adriennes essentials jumpsuit 2How about a back view

adriennes essentials jumpsuitLet me talk about this for a few minutes. When sewing goes wrong.

Normally when I sew something I can pretty much make it straight from the envelope with hardly any adjustments. I know some people who can’t do that and a few others who can.

I hardly EVER have trouble with a Simplicity pattern but boy oh boy was this one a headache.

I didn’t have enough fabric but I went ahead and hemmed it. I’m going to hem it again to wear with flats.

Shoes: Nine West Knotty

Accessories: Adrienne’s Essentials & Forever 21

For those of you who sew, here is a review:

Simplicity 1355

Pattern Description: This Easy-to-Sew pattern includes long dress and long or short jumper. Neckline options are v neck or scoop with sliding tie. Back is either a crossover or slit.
Pattern Sizing: XXS-XXL I made the Medium and it’s BIG.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, for the most part.
Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions are actually very good, it’s the pattern pieces that gave me some trouble.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the style of the jumpsuit.
Fabric Used: ChallisPattern alterations or any design changes you made: None. I made this straight out of the envelope but next time I will make the following changes:
  • lengthen the bodice by two inches. I love the blousing effect this is supposed to have and there isn’t enough of it for me. It’s also too short. I have it pulled to make it look more blousy lol
  • Lengthen the pants by two inches. The length straight out of the envelope wasn’t long enough for my heels. I purchased this fabric for another project and there wasn’t enough to add the additional length.
  • Raise the back. The back on this is REALLY low, not bra friendly at all. TOO low for me. It has more of a cowl effect than a cross over effect. I took this apart TWICE to adjust the back and it still didn’t fit the way I wanted it too.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? I WILL make this again. I already have it cut out in a muslin to give it another try.

Conclusion:This has the potential to be a great pattern. It could just be me not knowing what I’m doing. Someone else may make this and not have ANY issues so pick it up if you like this style 🙂

I pulled this out last week to cut, glad I read your review as I will probably need to make the same if not all the adjustments you made. I am short, big busted and not much rear, so I have to alter to get the fit I am looking for.

Yep adjustments required! Can’t wait to see your version!

love the fabric. I can understand why you moved ahead with this fabric. I know the next one will turn out to your liking now that you have it figured out.

Wow, lovely fabric choice and looks great on you !! …you’ve inspired me to get at it and make mine! However, I’ve never used a Simplicity pattern before, and their sizing has me confused… Do you tend to go by your usual size number for Simplicity? Or the listed measurements? I’m guessing measurements? For example I normally wear an 8 or medium (which is their XS?!) but I definitely don’t have a 23 waist nor 32.5 hips which is their size 8. My measurements fit their M which says size 14-16. I just don’t want it to be way too big. Nor way too small. And I read your medium ended up big… Any insight? thank you so much!!

I ran into your website when I was searching about this particular pattern. I first saw MimiStyles do it and I wanted to see how everyone else’s turned out. I am a beginner and I don’t want to mess things up. I am also a plus size girl. I was given a thin “flowy” material (a huge bulk) what type of material do you recommend?

    • AEadmin/ 28.05.2014Reply

I used a Challis. It’s thin and flawy. When I make it again I will use a knit. Probably an ITY which is also kinda thin and flowly. Hope that helps!

I absolutely LOVE this fabric. It’s super cute. I’m in the process of making this pattern and I will take your adjustment considerations to thought when cutting.

What is a way to change up the back. This will be my first time sewing since later last year. I don’t want my bra showing.

    • AEadmin/ 05.08.2014Reply

You can redraft the back so that it closes or use a different pattern piece for the back.

      • Janelle/ 05.08.2014Reply

        ohhh. Sounds pretty complicated

        • AEadmin/ 05.08.2014Reply

It’s not that bad at all. Just give it a shot. You can do it 🙂

          • Janelle/ 05.08.2014

I guess I wouldn’t know how to adjust the back. I’m definitely new at altering patterns.

          • Janelle/ 05.08.2014

I don’t want to mess it up and have to scrap the whole thing.

          • AEadmin/ 05.08.2014

Make a muslin first. That’s what I do when I’m unsure. Saves your fabric lol

          • Janelle/ 05.08.2014

I will do some research. I have no idea what a muslin is.

          • AEadmin/ 05.08.2014

It’s where you make the garment first out of a “play” fabric. It helps with any issues you may run into BEFORE you cut your actual fabric.

          • Janelle/ 05.08.2014

So I would make the whole top piece out of play fabric, make sure it fits then do it on the real fabric? Thanks!!!

          • AEadmin/ 06.08.2014

            YEs!! lol

  • Michelle/ 19.02.2015Reply

Very cute! I’m hoping to make this pattern before my vacation. Love your version, such great colors!

  • Michelle/ 19.02.2015Reply

Very cute! The fit looks great on you and love your fabric choice. I’m hoping to make one in rayon challis before my upcoming vacation.

    • AEadmin/ 20.02.2015Reply

Thank you! It will be gorgeous in challis!
