Butterick 5706…A Review & Epic Fail

Butterick 5706…A Review & Epic Fail

Now. I had GRAND plans for this dress. I won't EVEN post my inspiration pic because it really doesn't do it ANY justice.

This dress Butterick 5706 view c is a TOTAL fail. Here is the pic:

Ok. let me start by saying I was inspired lol but this is when inspiration goes wrong.

I was talking to my friend about it and let me tell yall, YOU NEED A FRIEND THAT WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU LOOK A HOT MESS LOL. Now this isn't exactly a hot mess but this dress doesn't work for me.

  • It's too linear. It needs to fit and flare.
  • Even though I lengthened this in the back and left the front short, I think the back could've been longer.
  • This was the first dress I made to wear while I was on bed rest. I didn't PLAN to belt it. I should have added some shaping. This dress has NONE.
  • I don't have a defined waist so I HAVE to have some great shaping or a belt to compliment my figure.

So my try at a high low / color block was a total fail. This dress is now in the trash, but I did learn a good lesson and me & my friend got a GOOD laugh lol. I did wear it once and put it in the black bag when I got back home lol.

I won't make this dress again but I WILL make another one based on my inspiration dress that I still won't post lol.

I'm finally getting to where I "get" what compliments my shape. I have to "create" a waist. I'm having fun now looking at patterns and discovering things that I really didn't notice before because I have figured out what looks good on me. Yep. WOOHOO lol. Not without the help of my dear heart though lol.

Alright, lemme go! More later!
Toodles!

I think I can guess your inspiration. It’s a lovely dress and I was thinking about M6504 to pull it off but trying to see if I can merge all those front pieces together and lengthening the back.

Looking at the dress, I think you used the wrong fabric. It looks like it’s a knit fabric. I’ve seen that style but I believe it look best sewn as a shirt dress. If you use a different fabric with some shaping you should be ok. In the end you did the right thing put that dress in the trashhhhhh!

I can guess too your inspiration dress. I found this tute : http://www.tashadelrae.com/2011/11/mullet-skirt-diy-x2.html, I haven’t try it yet but it might help you achieving the look you are reaching for.

I too was going to mention a different fabric. I look forward to seeing your next post. A friend that tells us the truth is worth GREAT value 🙂

are you sure you couldn’t have kept it if you took it in? when i first saw the dress with the belt, i though those were pleats in the front and it looked so cool! not asking you do go dumpster diving now, haha, but i wish you could’ve still done something with it. =)

It’s good to post about successes as well as mistakes. So many times bloggers talk about the “wadders” that they make but don’t show pictures of it. Thank you for being brave. Figuring out what flatters us is an ongoing journey.

You are too much! I’m still laughing. Thank you for posting this. I think we’ve all seen the inspiration dress, which is of course gorgeous. Thanks again for your courage.
