Three Natural Remedies for Migraines

Tuesday I was listening to the State of the Union and swooning over the Michael Kors suit that First Lady Michelle Obama was wearing and a migraine knocked me on my behind. Literally.

I normally get a REALLY bad migraine every three or four months. I haven’t had one in almost SIX months.

I can’t stand light, sound or certain smells. For the most part I’m curled up in the fetal position letting the tears flow. That’s normally how it works until it’s over.

There have been times when I have ended up in the ER and they would give me a shot. I have prescribed medication that I can take at the onset of one, but I don’t like the way the medicine makes me feel.

The past couple of times I’ve taken to home/natural remedies and they lessen the pain significantly and Im not medicated.

Lavender Oil – It smells great and it WORKS. I add a couple of drops for every two or three cups of boiling water.

Flaxseeds – Because some headaches are caused by inflammation and flax seeds contain omega 3 which reduces inflammation.

Almonds – LISTEN I don’t know WHAT it is about eating a handful of almonds but it WORKS. It takes me a minute to eat a handful but I get it down.

Do you suffer from migraines? Have you learned any tips/tricks that help you during that time? Please let me know in the comments.

So sorry to hear of your experience with migraines. I don’t get them often, but years ago, I used to get at least one a week. Some remedies I used are: Ice water and white vinegar compresses. I would cover my whole face with this; (Braggs) apple cider vinegar and honey tonic (warm seems to work better); Almonds contain natural aspirin–that’s why they work; and when I feel a headache coming on, sometimes I take a tablespoon of raw honey-swallow slowly-then drink a glass of water. Peppermint oil on the temples and back of the neck is good too. Hope this helps.

Im going to have to try the compress next time. Thanks for the tip!

I think the culprit for me is sugary foods. Basically eating right, lots of water and exercise keeps the migraines away.

I am so glad you posted on migraines. I have suffered with them from a young adult and was hospitalized a few times before for severe migraines. I was a regimen of medications to try and control them, but they did nothing but ease the pain but not stop the migraines all together. Like Jemimah posted, as soon as I changed my diet, cut out soda, and integrated more water, lots of it in my diet, my migraines eased off. I still get them from time to time, but nothing of the magnitude before I changed my diet. I no longer take any medication either.

I had to modify my diet as well. It helped a lot.

I don’t suffer from migraines but I have read and had someone that I work with swear that taking magnesium supplements daily helps as a preventative. I thought about about it because it relaxes muscle and does the same to the blood vessels causing the migraines. I don’t envy you at all because they are really debilitating. Good luck !!! Btw I heard that suit was also worn by Juliana marguiles on “The Good Wife”. It was really sharp !!!

I saw that on The Good Wife. I LOVE her wardrobe!

I suffer from chronic migraines and have to take a daily preventative but still get several a month, they just don’t last as long as they used to. Very interested in natural remedies, do you drink the lavender oil? Unfortunately, almonds and flaxseed give me migraines but definitely interested in the lavender oil. Where do you purchase it?

I use it as a steamer if that makes sense. Just inhale it.
