Simplicity, McCall's, Vogue & Butterick. The Big 4.

Simplicity, McCall’s, Vogue & Butterick. The Big 4.

Hey guys! So let’s talk about patterns. The Big 4. Simplicity, McCall’s, Vogue & Butterick. Even though I can drape and draft my own pattern I STILL enjoy buying patterns and sewing from them. As of right now, I think my favorite pattern company is Vogue. Followed closely by McCall’s.

Normally when I go into a store to get patterns I already have a list. I love looking online and going through all the views and adding them to my pattern list on evernote. Evernote is THE BOMB for keeping lists lol.

I look forward to “new pattern time” each season. I love to see what the pattern companies are going to present to us. Sometimes there are some awesome offerings, other times not so much. I’ve seen so many patterns that are just the same as something else. Like they have just taken one pattern number and put it on a different envelope lol.

What is the point of this post? THE WEBSITES!!

McCall’s, Vogue & Butterick have a new website. It is A M A Z I N G. It looks good, it’s organized well, it’s very user friendly. Superb.

Ohhhh but Simplicity. I can not stand the updated website. I do not feel that I am alone in this lol. It is horrible. While it does look nice, it is SO hard to navigate, it doesn’t recognize pattern numbers and it is not organized well. AT ALL. Not to me. I LOVED the old site. I could go to Burda Patterns —> Pants and look at ALL of Burda’s pants. Oh but now? You have to scroll through ALL the skirts/pants for both Simplicity AND Burda. Now that may not be annoying to some, but it IS annoying to me. I don’t know. Maybe I am the only one.

I honestly haven’t been on the Simplicity site since the update (other than today to link it) because it gives me a headache and it makes me want to throw my iMac out of the window. No, seriously. It does. I don’t know if they have made updates or not to make it better but I’m scared to look lol. I don’t want to be annoyed.

So, y’all tell me what do you think of the websites? Would you rather look in a pattern book or look online BEFORE you go to purchase patterns? I don’t often sit down and look at the pattern books. EVERY NOW AND THEN, but it’s not often at all. I would MUCH rather have a list already made (from looking online) and grab what I want other than sitting down in the store. Ok, let’s talk in the comments.

I totally agree. While the McCalls, Vogue, Butterick website is fantastic the site for Simplicity is terrible. Yikes – how can there be such a difference. BTW, Adrienne, I read your blog regularly and enjoy it very much! Karen

SO glad it’s just not me Karen lol. Thanks for your kind words 🙂

You are not alone in your thoughts about Simplicity’s site. I thought I was doing something wrong when I kept trying to see only Simplicity patterns. I was scared when first saw the redesign of McCalls because it looked like Simplicity’s on the surface. But I played around with it and I love it!

      LOL! ME TOO!!!

Love the new Vogue patterns website – it is just so beautiful. I too look online before buying a pattern. I like to review the pattern line drawings at my leisure. I don’t look at the pattern catalogues ever.

    • admin/ 30.03.2016Reply

      Yep! Same here.

  • Johann/ 30.03.2016Reply

I actually love to go in the store, sit at the table, grab my pen and paper and start writing my pattern numbers down as I flip through the pages of the catalogs. Of course this is something I do when I have nothing else on my “to do” list. Lol! I seldom go on the pattern company websites.

Now I won’t say I DON’T really like it, I just normally don’t take the time to sit there. EVERY now and then but not often lol

    Great post Adrienne.
I personally like to look in the books that are set out in the stores, I have not yet looked at the updated websites.
I will definitely go ahead and check them out now that you have made it so intriguing.

LOL go look. You gonna be mad lol

I find the new MBV websites easy to maneuver and quite user friendly. Simplicity however as you said is something else altogether! I even made a comment about it on their website. They replied letting me know that had received the comment and would get back to me but haven’t yet. I’ve been using the UK version of the website found here http://www.simplicitynewlook.com/, UK Burda here http://www.simplicitynewlook.com/burda-patterns/new-collection/?p=9#.VvwyDTGfbTS. I can get around those much better.

Oh Faye! I can’t wait to check this out lol. Thank you!

You are not alone . I live in the Bahamas and select my pattern numbers from the website so when family members or friends are traveling they can purchase them for me. I find it very difficult to navigate the website because you have to click on the picture first in order to get the pattern number! Too cumbersome! I am more than certain that Simplicity pattern sales has declined significantly.

    • admin/ 30.03.2016Reply

See! Girl. I know looking online for you is a MUST.

  • Beauty Bug's Closet/ 30.03.2016Reply

I agree as well. The Simplicity website is a headache. It already wasn’t the beat before the “upgrade”. I have resorted to finding pattern numbers through other bloggers and through Google because the website is frustrating. I do, however, really like the Mccalls website.

    • admin/ 30.03.2016Reply

Yep! Patternreview is good too for looking up patterns.

  • Shari/ 30.03.2016Reply

I Agree Adrienne! I am not a fan of the new site its horrible! Especially when you try to search for a specific pattern and it gives you a list of several from all three companies which is sooooooo annoying! Yes even when you specifically choose which patterns you want to see! While it looks nice it’s not user friendly at all and I prefer the old site for sure!

    • admin/ 30.03.2016Reply

Yep, I miss the old site.

  • Monica/ 30.03.2016Reply

The Simplicity site is very frustrating and counter-intuitive. You click on a specific brand and it APPEARS that you can drill down by type. But if you click on dresses, for example, it shows you dress patterns for all the companies. But i did stumble upon a filter feature not long ago. So having clicked on Dresses, if you scroll down a bit, on the left hand side there’s a set of filters that allows you to choose a company. Again, the setup is unclear and not user friendly but there is a way around sitting at the pattern tables lol

    • admin/ 31.03.2016Reply

ROFLOL!! There is ALWAYS a way lol

  • Carol/ 30.03.2016Reply

The new McCall’s sites are all that! Simplicity got duped by their web master. I’m a techie and sent them a note about how many issues and problems their user would anticipate and that is was done poorly. They have yet to respond. I coulda hooked’em up! LOL!! Anyhooooo, I just checked out the sites Faye mentioned. I think I’ll visit that site until Simplicity USA get’s their act together.

    • admin/ 31.03.2016Reply

HAHAHAHAHAHAH you make me bust out laughing lol.

  • Myra/ 31.03.2016Reply

Great post Adrienne!! I ALWAYS have a list when I go into the store to purchase patterns! You’ll hardly ever find me looking through a book in the store! I love going through the online sites! I so agree with you on Simplicity, it’s unbelievable they’ve received feedback on their site and have not reacted yet! Simplicity, get with the program and get it together!! (I know they’re watching us!)

    • admin/ 31.03.2016Reply

      LOL yep! LOL

I get a concussion when I go to the NEW Simplicity!!! Vogue/Butterick/McCall’s NEWNESS is AWESOME!!! FIESTA 😉

    • admin/ 31.03.2016Reply

      I AGREE LOL

  • Angie B./ 31.03.2016Reply

Trust me, it is not just you. I love the updated BMV site as much as I detest the updated Simplicity site. I am one of those who would go online and make my lists prior to going in store to purchase. I rarely looked through a catalog. But with simplicity updating their site, I would rather look through the catalog than bother with trying to navigate their site..

    • admin/ 31.03.2016Reply

LOL I went to JoAnn’s this morning and actually LOOKED in the book lol.

  • Kelly/ 01.04.2016Reply

I agree the Simplicity site is indeed a horror to navigate. So like you I don’t visit the site much. I wonder have the IT people at Simplicity have ever taken another look at the site since launching it? BMV patterns websites ate similar to Simplicity in design but much better over all. One can hope that Simiplicity will improve.

    • admin/ 04.04.2016Reply

Girl I doubt it because it hasn’t changed lol

  • Maymunah/ 02.04.2016Reply

Yet I totally agree with you Adrienne
What is simplicity thinking the site is horrible!
I am not to sure about the new look for McCall pattern though hopefully I will get use to it lol

    • admin/ 04.04.2016Reply

LOL it’s easy to get used to the other site lol.

  • Barbara/ 14.04.2016Reply

Adrienne – I love reading your blog. You are always so uplifting! 🙂

    • admin/ 14.04.2016Reply

Awww thanks so much for the kind words Barbara. It means a lot.
