Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

Staph Scalded Skin Syndrome (SSSS) My Grandsons Health Scare.

Hey guys! I wanted to share this story in order to help educate ANY one that this message will reach.

There will be slightly graphic photos.

Ky is now 9 months old. This all happened last month and it started on a Wednesday.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

Ky is SUCH a happy baby. When I tell you he doesn’t really cry until he is hungry, wet or just not feeling well. Even then he still smiles.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

In both of the above photos notice the redness around his eyes and mouth. You can see it more in the photo of him in the car seat. He was taken to his pediatrician this particular morning and they missed it.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

This photo was taken the following day after a SECOND trip to his pediatrician. I applaud Kayla. She’s a young mom but she KNEW something wasn’t quiet right with Ky. They said he had the flu, prescribed him some meds and some cream for his skin. Kayla was satisfied because she felt like she had an answer to what was going on with her son. I wasn’t convinced so I sent the photos to Auntie Keisha who is a nurse and she recognized it immediately. She told me to take him to Children’s Hospital in order to rule out Staph Scalded Skin Syndrome.

I will forever say that she saved his life.

We arrived at Children’s Hospital and I promise you within 15 minutes we were in a room.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

This is when his skin first started to peel. Listen y’all. His little skin was raw. Remember I said hes NOT a baby that would cry. Not like that. He screamed and literally wrestling with ANYONE that touched him. According to the doctors/nurses it felt like his skin was on fire. Kayla later learned the best way to pick him up was by his legs. His upper body was just in pain. Under his arms was peeling and raw and yeah, picking him up that was was not the business.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

His little eyes were swelling so badly. Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome is EXTREMELY contagious. However I was already in the room, already touching and loving and helping Kayla. I washed my hands so much till they were extra dry but I’d do it all over again. Everyone else who came in had on gloves, gowns and masks.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

It was around this time that his skin started to crack and bleed. His eyes were barely open. He was SUCH a big boy. He was still trying to smile and laugh. He never stopped eating lol. The doctors/nurses assured Kayla that it was still just fine to nurse him. So she continued. I only fed him formula when Kayla was resting. Basically I took the night shift lol.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

98% of the time he ONLY wanted his mom. There is just something about a mothers love. We had to “trick” him so she could just go use the restroom.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

Some of the photos I won’t post but this was once he was able to have ointment on his skin. OMG, he was SO happy to have some relief and so were we.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

He was starting to heal. No longer in the critical care unit and still smiling.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

I’m pretty sure he got sick of taking pictures. Because this isn’t something that is seen a lot E V E R Y O N E was taking pictures and coming to see him at Children’s. It IS a teaching hospital and I want them to recognize it if they see it again.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

This was once he came home. He was already looking a LOT better. They stayed with me for a few days JUST to be sure everything was better.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

He continued to get better. His skin continued to “shed” but that is part of the process.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

This photo was taken this past Saturday. He literally has NO scars. There is ONE place that may scar on his wrist but we are still watching that.

Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome

This photo was taken this morning. We FaceTime EVERY morning lol.

I am BEYOND thankful that he is doing well. We don’t know where he picked this up from. He isn’t in daycare at all. We DO know that Staph lives on the skin anyway so who knows. I know I’m super thankful and so is Kayla. I asked her if I could share this just so no one else would miss this IF they happen to see something similar.

Gotta say thanks to ALL My doctor and nurse friends. Like I KNOW I got on y’all nerves asking ALL the questions but they answered me with NO hesitation. Share this with someone.  Especially if you know of someone with very small children. I’m thankful that we caught it before it got any worse than it did.

Adrienne

    Thank God for questioning mommas!

I had an opportunity to see Mr. Handsome last week. I saw the tuff of hair on top of his head first, then looked at your beautiful daughter. I said that’s got to be the grandbaby I see Adrienne posting all the time.
